about

Mr. Happy is a 2015 VICE short-film featuring Chancelor Bennett AKA Chance the Rapper, directed by Colin Tilley and edited by Vinnie Hobbs. Back in 2014 during post-production, Marcus D was tapped by fellow Seattle University classmate, Vinnie Hobbs to score the 23-minute feature.

The tracks ended up being cut at the last minute, which isn't an uncommon occurrence in the industry, but these seven eerie, suspenseful, and sometimes downright chilling tracks were made to fit the film, which tells the story of a depressed young man who puts a hit out on himself.

The songs were composed on a low-budget laptop (that was later stolen off stage at a Bop Alloy show), in a cockroach and rat-infested apartment in Shinjuku (Takadanobaba) that Marcus and his future wife were living in at the time. The film and this environment undoubtedly inspired the unusually dark musical departure for the normally cool and jazzy hip-hop producer.
